The Harper-Jones House is situated in the market town of Petersfield in Hampshire, within the conservation area and South Downs National Park.

The clients aim was to create a contemporary 4 bedroom family home, that would sit comfortably in it’s market town context and enhance the street scene with the use of the arts and crafts features of the area.

The design integrates all the various design factors required into a spacious living and social arrangement. The design creates a balance between large open spaces and more private areas.

The double volume main entrance, with a floating staircase leading up to the first floor, gives the dwelling a sense of grandeur upon entering and allows for easy navigation through the plan. On the ground floor, the large open plan dining, kitchen and lounge lead directly out to the garden with a large patio with built-in barbecue, ideal for entertaining.

There is also an enclosed family cinema room, private study and separate guest suite on this level.

All the bedrooms and the pyjama lounge lead off the double volume area on the first floor and have large full height windows, sliding doors or Juliet balconies bringing in light and allowing for the spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Externally the house has utilised Hampshire Stock Bricks for the walls and wrap on the ground floor this acts as a base for lighter timber, zinc and glass materials on the storey above. The wrap frames an array of full height glazing, which is repeated on the first floor. This combination creates a playful patchwork of timber, zinc and glazing.

The house although contemporary in form uses materials, details and proportions that are respectful to the arts and crafts design principles and so blends in harmoniously within the surrounded area.
