Harlem Residence completed 2014 / Harlem NY In this Harlem apartment, universal design addresses client needs now and over time. The 1500 square-foot space transforms spatially and visually through a system of sliding panels that open and close to create new volumes. The brightly colored sliding surfaces themselves become key elements of the design. / Wide doorways and low counter heights were designed specially for the owners, one of whom uses a wheelchair, and the flexible layout is also intended to meet the changing needs of their young family. A previous project for the family was completed by Della Valle Bernheimer, where Garrick Jones worked as Studio Director prior to starting his own firm Ten to One. Materials selected for the interiors integrate light, color, and texture into the space. Custom fabricated backlit translucent resin panels used in custom cabinetry and monolithic sliding doors allow surfaces and spaces to glow from within, and the creation of recessed ceilings with cove lighting subtly further brightens and adds depth to interior rooms. Specially considered features and furnishings include a table that lifts up and down, a large curbless shower, and easy-to-grasp custom door handles. Wood veneers and laminates, iridescent wall coverings and tiles, stainless steel, combine with LED lighting to create a vibrant and flexible environment inviting to all.
