A new environmental, social and political consciousness has awakened in our world, one in which Moscow will play an important role. The global shift is demonstrating greater common ground among all the world’s humanity creating a fundamental understanding of how our world can use its wisdom, spirituality and ethics to better all of our lives.
The design of the Pushkinsky Cinema must not only demonstrate this new consciousness, it must respect the past and forecast the future. This design invites the people of the city and world into the open hands of the Cinema, a place that can educate, entertain, inspire, and physically protect its patrons. Merely re-facing the façade of this building would not be enough to express this profound reflection. The design must portray Moscow and Russia’s openness, technological, artistic, social, and political accomplishments, as well as, the philosophy Russia embraces, that the dreams and aspirations of every person can come true.
Organic forms have been utilized throughout the “Hands of Time and Transparency” proposal. Humanity doesn’t seek to confine itself in square or rectilinear shapes, but instead seeks to live among nature, with natural forms while also being protected from the natural elements. This could never be more apparent than in a city like Moscow that faces the challenge of enduring humid summers and long, cold winters. These organic forms/elements soften the edges of the existing building, raised social gathering deck, entry stairs, and entry from Pushkin Square that promote entry and interest to the building.
