The Hamilton House is a project about small. Small block, small house, small budget and small family. The clients didn't require more space just a better arrangement. Light and space is what was needed, a challenging concept in an urban environment. This small worker's cottage is situated in Hamilton, Newcastle. The original 4 room cottage had a later addition to the rear adding the amenities - kitchen, bathroom and laundry. This addition had poor orientation, light and relationship to the garden. There was an existing detached garage that was set back from the rear lane. The success of the project relied upon cost effective passive solutions to overcome the constraints of the site and generate flexible and dramatic internal and external spaces. The plan of the house is simple but required careful consideration with regard to material selection and facade configuration to maximise light whilst minimising heat gain and maintaining privacy. The built form is simple and conventional. It is the internal joinery, design and constructed by Dylan Wood which contributes to the success of the space. The client's brief was for a better arrangement of their existing rooms. The new extension is about light and space and creates a sanctuary in this inner Newcastle suburb.
