The Landscape Architecture Bureau was commissioned to design all of the open spaces in the 600 x 80 foot passage from the re-designed Navy Yard Metro Station to the main entrance of the new Washington Nationals Ballpark. With substantial mixed-use and retail development on each side of the street and many thousands of pedestrians on game days, the entire street was designed without curbs to allow for its use as an exclusively pedestrian zone on 100-125 days per year. Both vehicularand pedestrian zones are paved in a polychrome stone palette with a zone for furnishings, lighting and planting separating cars from pedestrians when the street is open to traffic; LAB kept the use of bollards to a bare minimum. Stormwater from both the street and sidewalk is directed to the planting areas, reducing the impact on the city’s overwhelmed sewer system. Street trees are provided with additional soil volume, helping to increase the urban canopy and create a valuable landscape for the community. This project has won awards from the ASLA Potomac Chapter and the AIA Washington DC Chapter.
