Half Moon forms part of newly created Creative Quarter
Newcastle based firm Intersect Architects Ltd has completed a £850 k mixed retail and residential project in Gateshead for Adderstone Group, as part of Gateshead Council’s aspirational Bridges Creative Quarter.
Completed in August this year, The Half Moon was granted planning consent in October 2010, and building started on-site in November by Brims Construction Ltd. The proposal which completes the street scene along Half Moon Lane presents a strikingly contrasting contemporary elevational form to the surrounding area. The development comprises a ground floor retail unit which has the ability to be subdivided to maximise the letting potential, while a separate residential entrance provides access to upper floor accommodation, comprising of six apartments on the site of the former Half Moon Inn.
Adjacent to the newly refurbished Central public house, the building has been designed by Intersect Architects Ltd to contrast with its neighbours, and be an iconic addition to the Gateshead Bridges Conservation Area.
The design comprises a simple palette of materials to express the planar modernist composition on this tight town centre site. The sloping mono pitched roof element combined with the white renderedfaçades and clear glazed elements are punctuated by lime green column casings and glass mosaic tile window reveals.
Commenting on the project, Ian Baggett, Managing Director of Adderstone Group said:
“ Intersect Architects Ltd has achieved an economical and eye-catching design on this difficult site which will be a valuable addition to our portfolio of properties.”
Andrew Scott, Managing Director of Intersect Architects, further added:
“This site has remained derelict for a number of years and the building completes the redevelopment of Half Moon Lane adding interest and vitality to the area. It has been a pleasure working with the Developer to complete this commission.”
