This project is an alteration to an existing automotive shop, an adaptive reuse of the building’s structure, converting it into the offices of a realty company located on the west end of Washington Avenue. There have been many adaptations along this stretch of street giving previously community oriented businesses the new iconography of the after dark drinkery or exclusivity of a private club. Most of these conversions are meant to invoke a clear apprehension. Come drink here, come eat here. Our approach was to make the conversion more ambiguous perhaps unsettling the club goers. Would they make a mistake at night and think that a new spot has opened for their discovery? We like the idea that the existing building is faintly visible behind the scrim of metal that is cloaked over it. We like the idea that inside it is quite different from what the outside projects and that the inside is held captive in the original structure. We like the idea that it is not a club (not enough parking) but that it participates in the language of the club while preserving the banality of the past.
The plan is organized around a two story central core. The interior of the existing metal roof and siding is sprayed to reduce noise and to provide thermal insulation. The existing concrete floors are painted. The exterior is painted white to reduce heat gain and to present a background for signage. The front entry gate incorporates signage and when closed forms a screen at the street side windows.
