Gutter Grid was chosen as one of 10 projects to be exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York. More occurring storm surges, hurricanes, and rising tides recently have threatened the fluid relationship between the New York City GRID and its edge – the water. GUTTER_GRID proposes to not look at the GRID but the fringe encapsulating it. A sponge-like territory wrapping the city allows the existing grid to overspill in a controlled manner by protecting it through a thickened lining that negotiates city and water edge, becoming an adaptable surface that embraces catastrophe, rather than avoiding it. Harmful water is not only flowing into the grid but the combination of heavy rainfall and sewer overflow from the grid, if left untreated, pollutes the harbor. The GUTTER_GRID allows the GREATEST GRID to overspill in a controlled manner, therefore releasing the current congestion and protecting it from the impacts of changing environments. The GUTTER_GRID turns the fringe of the grid into a sophisticated and spatial gutter system, a permeable park zone that creates a supportive lining around the grid and negotiates between grid and water to productively facilitate the city. This negotiation is by means of four types of gutter vessels:1. WATER VESSELS are large basins that collect floodwater from the harbor as well as storm water overflow from the grid. The collected water is stored and delayed to adopt the flow of water to the systems capacity, protecting the city grid as well as the harbor from unwanted water. When the basins are not in use they are given back to the permeable park as places to linger, amphitheater space, gathering and recreation.2. CARBON VESSELS are large areas of vegetation that proliferate the gutter. The vegetation stands in a bed of soil that is covered with wood chips from recycled wood. Grass is not used to avoid fertilizer use. This carbon vessels help absorb part of the carbon dioxide produced by the grid and on the surrounding waters.3. MOBILITY VESSELS are a series of spaces under the permeable park surface. These serve as traffic release systems and contain park and ride stations where people can leave their car and/or take a bike via a public bike system to enter into the grid. Mobility Stations are located in proximity to the tunnels and bridges that connect the island and are interconnected with underground thoroughfares.4. ACTIVITY VESSELS provide for programmatic overflow, allowing space for activities that cannot fit the current grid. The activities can have a wide range of public engagement such as sports, temporal gatherings for performances, etc. These activities can be held outside as well as inside of large pavilions that contain restaurants and spaces for gathering.
