The Gutowski’s dream was to build a contemporary home, in harmony with its natural setting near the Bruce Trail overlooking the Boyne River Valley. It was to be an “organic” home that would evoke the drama of the site and be liberating in its openness to it. As a result, a form was created to integrate with the hill, whose shape followed the ridge and emerged from it. The plan extends in multiple directions at once without finality as it opens outward towards the natural setting.
The dominant element of the Gutowski Residence is its roof - floating above heavy stone piers. Designed as a series of folded plates, the roof follows the undulating terrain. The roof functions effectively to shed snow and rain. It shields the house from cold winds, while the open south side allows sunlight in. Wherever possible, the form of the roof was maintained in the interior space, creating soaring volumes. The diagonal movement through the house mimics the natural trails. It integrates tightly compressed spaces with expansive loft areas, offering panoramic landscape views. The landscaping design reinforces the merge between exterior and interior space and provides a variety of outdoor rooms and spaces on both sides of the house. Natural stone and wood interior details reflect the Owners' love for these materials and their appreciation of craftsmanship.
