The Housing Authority of New Orleans determined that demolition of a portion of the existing Guste I, and new construction of eight duplex townhomes was the appropriate direction in the development of its housing portfolio. The new development, Guste II, is part of a movement towards creating a more sustainable, efficient, and livable affordable housing environment.
The LEED Silver equivalent buildings were designed within the parameters of “new urbanism” design principals, and promote healthy, safe living environments. The new units replace stark 1960s style housing, with modern, yet contextually scaled multi-family houses. Perez collaborated with area residents through design charrettes, which allowed for community input during the design stages. The project was completed in April, 2012 on schedule and on budget.
