Guanmiao bus station is originally Guanmiao fruit and vegetable market which connect the plain with the hillside, in Guanmiao district of eastern Tainan City. As the demand for the operation of bus service increases in 2013, the existing Guanmiao market will be remodeled as a bus station and create more parking spaces yet still remain the market due to overall long term development of public transport and enhance the standard of public transport service.

Guanmiao bus station is aimed to become a memorable and unique place in people’s mind but not a passing by place. To prominent its unique, the bus station is remodeled by using the visual imagery of local specialties (pineapple and bamboo shoot) and assimilate into surrounding environment.

The existing market office is remained by adding steel structure façade with red perforated aluminum shading devices which create a visual imagery of pineapple to consolidate the fragile and old market office. The perforated shading devices allow light to display different shadow effect that have delighted the space.

The extending balcony, semi open toilets and the extension of bamboo-shoot-like rain cover as bus station provide a more comfortable and convenient transit station. The higher part of bus station rain cover is designed to prevent passengers from drenching by rain. The different height of the market office and the bus station provide efficient ventilation and heat insulation.

The circulation route is redesigned for bus station which can accommodate two waiting buses and one resting bus, taxi waiting area, vehicles parking spaces and T-bike area.

Consequently, Guanmiao bus station is trying to create an important and welcoming gateway to impress people and represent as a local characteristic landmark.

The design team tried to convey the process of leaving home and returning home by using the construction technology that can achieve in the local and using the language that keen to public to develop Guanmiao district more actively.
