The design concept for the Guangdong Science Center was derived from an imaginary “island of discovery.” The development would be one of the largest centers for discovery and science in the world upon completion. Located on the western tip of Xiaoguwei Island, the proposed project is a part of the area’s overall development into a university city.
In keeping with the island feel, the design of the science center includes undulating strips of glass and metal panels to create a canopy-like effect over the top level – in a spectacular spatial effect. Diffused natural light filters down through this permeable layer as sunlight might drift through the leaves of a forest. And with an abundance of eco-parks, nature paths and walkways, and waterfront access, there are plenty of opportunities for visitors to learn about ecological principles through a series of outdoor exhibits.
