History is a dialogue with all times.
Before the 3rd century AD, people believed that the Roman Empire was the Eternal City, and art and architecture were its silent testimonies. Over the past two millennia, Western culture has sprouted countless new branches from the classical tradition. The spiritual factors of East and West, once ancient adversaries, have gradually transcended historical barriers. In the enlightenment of modernity, we have gained a more enriched and inclusive global perspective.
On June 9, 2024, at the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition, GILE, Mr. Stefano Piontini and Mr. Xu Dongliang showcased their distinctive exhibition area titled "Luce e design Design Aesthetic Exhibition," centered around Light Plus and inspired by the Colosseum.
01 The Square Illuminated by Ideas
Extracting a frame from the daily imagery of ancient Rome, one might witness pedestrians, carts, and horses passing through the triumphal arch into the city. Roaming, gathering, statues of gods, churches, and the center of governance sharing the central square... This centrifugal place spirit remains powerful even today.
Therefore, the designer positioned the main stage at the center of the "square", using it as the focal point. Radiating from this center, luminous seating blocks were arranged in a concentric pattern, inspired by the world's most spectacular circular architecture—the Roman Colosseum. Simplifying the intricate details of the arch vault structure, which serves as the gateway connecting the square and the exhibition area, visitors can move freely, and the exhibition space achieves maximum usability.
Eight sets of illuminated column-style display shelves are positioned on both sides of the main entrance pathway, guiding visitors towards the main stage. In the silent narrative of light, structured into matter, and matter transformed into translucent reflections, the long-lost empire gracefully projects itself onto contemporary spaces. Within this environment, every glint and shadow of history connects with the present moment. The design of light also affirms that true power lies within, allowing for a straightforward expression.
02 East and West Moving Towards Each Other
The lightweight walls of the main forum theater are crafted from light metal and washi paper, reminiscent of bamboo strips supporting large jade-colored paper lanterns. Through these walls, glimpses reveal an intricate metal framework interwoven within.
As two contrasting yet complementary spiritual factors, the duality of East and West has always contained the tension of humanity's ultimate integration of rational, empirical, and pragmatic thought with an inclination towards inner life and intuitive thinking. Between East and West, phenomena and semantics, the dialectical movement of humanity never ceases, oscillating moment by moment.
One originates from architectural cultural threads that have flowed continuously from the source of history to the present day, while the other belongs to the Eastern myths of creation. These two streams converge and interact, stirring up a fusion that presents a new charm in just a few words of design. It also metaphorically suggests that fruitful conversations often involve clashes between two or more cultures and ideas.
Design Aesthetics Exhibition and Design Aesthetics Forum came to a successful conclusion on June 11, covering topics spanning industrial design, interior design, architecture, culture, art, and lifestyle. It achieved a profound connection between light and people, light and space, and light and environment, establishing a high-end design showcase space and dialogue platform that is professional, deep, interdisciplinary, and integrative.
The five forums will each present the diversity and innovation of design from different perspectives, exploring the integration and balance of Eastern and Western design concepts through design. The forums will feature insights from Stefano Piontini, General Manager and Partner of VSP Shanghai; Lilian Tian, Founder and Design Director of WTL and Founder and Chairman of Jinshang; Cheney Chen, Senior Technical Manager of Helvar; Chao Chen, Director and Design Director of bpi Lighting Design; Marco Montanucci, Design Director of Dariel Studio Shanghai; Lanzo Joella, Partner of Liquidesign; Wang Xinqiao, Partner of Light Cibles Lighting Design Office in France; Liang Bin, Co-founder and Design Director of Moxu Space; Ann Yuan, Marketing Director of L&S Lighting; Paulo Guacchione, Senior Director and Senior Design Director of B+H Design Office; Xu Dongliang, Principal Designer of Dongliang International Lighting Design Center; Hu Mingzhao, Partner of JODU Lighting; Tian Huan, Managing Director of HDA Handu Design; Yang Yuewen, Design Director of FillStudio; Yang Yun, Director of Art Lighting at Shanghai Modern Architectural Decoration Environmental Design Research Institute; Chen Kaixuan, Lighting Design Director of J&A Design; Yin Haibo, Founder of WhenArt; Wang Xuechen, Executive Dean of the Institute of Cultural and Tourism Creativity of the Huajian Group Environmental Institute; Zhang Qinghong, Chairman of MANA; Zhang Lin, Founder of Guangyu Environmental Art Design; and Wang Junhan, Deputy Director of Shanghai Fudan Planning and Architectural Design Research Institute and Chief Product Designer of Shikongmen Digital-Real Integration APP.
The design lexicon constructs parallel spaces between history and contemporary times, East and West, while light perpetually belongs to the broader universe, where all human civilizations participate in the same grand spectacle under its gaze. From real living spaces to stages, squares, and cities, the passionate exploration and construction of light ignite the torch of design, an eternal beacon of human artistry and contemplation.
Although the event has concluded, the contemplation of light will persist. Light is no longer an isolated element; it is now an integral part of design, interacting with other related elements to create wonderful sparks, bringing endless possibilities to our lives.
