In the heart of Salzburg’s protected historic centre, a substantially altered Gründerzeit villa has been meticulously restructured and reinterpreted. The design intent was to reawaken the building’s inherent spatial character—fortifying its historic substance while simultaneously introducing contemporary standards of living. Through a series of carefully calibrated interventions, the internal organisation was redefined.
From the entrance, the gaze is immediately drawn outward toward the garden—conceived as a central compositional element. Continuous wide-plank timber flooring extends through the interiors, establishing a visual and tactile continuity that unites past and present in a warm and deliberate architectural gesture.
The formerly residual basement was transformed into a generous garden-level living area with the addition of a newly conceived conservatory. Interior and exterior dissolve into one another: a terrain-integrated bench doubles as a retaining wall, softly articulating the terraced landscape.
The vertically planted conservatory operates simultaneously as a striking architectural feature and as an environmental device, providing passive summer shading. The redesigned exterior spaces engage seamlessly with the historic context, underscoring a respectful and finely tuned dialogue between heritage and contemporary intervention.
