The structure of the Green Common Space was built during the collaborative construction workshop for the Nursing Home for the Elderly and Disabled in the city of Yakutsk. This humanitarian project was a test part of the design research of Socio-cultural Initiatives through Collaborative Making in the Subarctic Climate Conditions. The structure was built by non-professional volunteers from the local community of Yakutsk, on the funds raised from the local businesses. The volunteers were young engineering and architectural graduates, students from the local agricultural schools and other enthusiasts of different age and background.
The construction was organised by Maiia Sivtseva (Architecture of Rapid Change and Scarce Resources Research Group) in collaboration with a Canadian designer Aileen Ling (Makeshift Collective). The name of the workshop Growing Structures symbolises both literal and metaphorical growing processes - its physical and non-physical artefacts, such as the structure itself and plants for it, knowledge for the participants and facilitation of the community cohesion in the area during the process of construction (6 days of construction).
