TOUZET STUDIO PRESENTS DESIGNS FOR TERRA’S ‘GROVE CENTRAL’ AS THE RESILIENT, TRANSIT, MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT OF MIAMI’S FUTURE
Designed by award-winning, Miami-based architects Touzet Studio, Grove Central presents a 21st century, multi-modal, mass-transit development for Miami that seeks to enhance and increase ridership by adding workforce housing and creating urban spaces that will link the Underline to Miami’s best parks and to Coconut Grove, one of Miami’s oldest and most desirable neighborhoods.
Proposed by Terra and Grass River Property, the development will bring approximately 135,000 square feet of prime retail space, 288 multifamily residences, a new 898-space public parking garage, and privately-funded improvements to the Coconut Grove Metrorail station, a 5-acre property located at the intersection of US 1 and Southwest 27th Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in by end of 2018.
The project focuses on advancing a sustainable and resilient development model that combines residential density, a balanced mix of commercial uses, and access to mass transit. Grove Central adapts to the long-term impacts of climate change and promotes urban development in areas with transit connectivity.
“It is important to address Miami’s biggest issues head on, and we wanted to provide creative, innovative housing and transit solutions that would stand for the future of the city,” said Jacqueline Gonzalez Touzet.
This project will include several innovative housing prototypes, offering a mix of smaller units and co-living options.
Grove Central Station includes a Linear Plaza with mature canopy trees and extensive overhangs, making commuting, using the multi-modal station, and retail shopping a pleasant experience year-round.
A rooftop social hub will feature common areas to promote a sense of community and connectivity, including a coffee shop, cocktail bar, rooftop lounge, outdoor moving screening and musical event space, and co-working spaces. Painted signs and wayfinding will be incorporated along the Linear Plaza to help make this multi-modal station easy to use and convenient. Additionally, a cultural program of art, music, and events will be incorporated into the Linear Plaza and the Rooftop Social, further fostering connections between the users of Grove Central Station and the local community.
Grove Central will feature a large rooftop solar trellis, capable of powering the entire development. It will incorporate a large micro-grid battery that will provide silent, stable power without toxic gas emissions. Very importantly, Grove Central Station has been designed to be a sizable hub of normalcy during natural disturbances: Resilient Design will allow Grove Central to continue to deliver people to their jobs, provide key goods and services shortly after any storm event, and power residences and businesses. Grove Central Station exemplifies cutting-edge and smart development for 21st century Miami.
“We’re excited to work with a developer in Miami like Terra who not only
recognizes what Miami needs but is also willing to implement important solutions, making this a very exciting project for a firm like ours that is so committed to resiliency and more affordable housing solutions in Miami,” says Touzet.
