For Boom, it was the Do Lab’s desire to really “Bring it”
with respect to the sculpture. Water (the festival theme), inspired the
shape of the space, and recycled shipping pallet material inspired what
would envelope the environment. The pallets in Portugal were unlike
the pallets in the states and they lend to a different sculptural form.
Extreme attention went into the placement of each piece to create a
unique basket look that works well when lit from the interior at
night. The forms were shaped to literally hold the stage and the
people in it, as if a hand is coming from the earth to grip., relating
to the community aspect of the festival. The client was very pleased
with this space and decided to leave it as a permanent event space in
Idanha-Nova, Portugal. We had a long run working with pallets as a construction medium. After this project was completed we decided that we're done with them. It's time for something new.
