An apartment building for humans, birds, bees, bats, butterflies and plants! At Amsterdam’s Groenmarkt a truly nature-inclusive construction will arise. Its facades are designed to be simultaneously overgrown and inhabited by animals. And on the roof: a dune landscape where you can swim! No matter what, the wind blows high up in the sky; the noise of the city resembles the rustling of the sea. So here we have brought in the best-fitting landscape: the dunes (just as high and windy). Now you no longer have to leave Amsterdam to go to the beach…
For this site, the city of Amsterdam held a competition requesting two separate buildings and a surrounding public space design. The team, of which Buro Harro was part, won the competition by proposing two blocks with significantly different characters: the Marnixstraat-block and the Singelgracht-block. The first is a classic, bold yet modest brick building that fits into the protected 19th century city sight naturally. The latter Singelgracht-block is a sparkly, lush green and contemporary structure facing the water: playful, generous and light. It offers space to people, plants and animals. The bricks contain holes allowing birds to nest, and climbers find their way up from planting boxes at the building’s base.
The ground level encircles the new blocks, allowing you to walk freely around the entire site. The new buildings stand free, just like the existing edifices. A new car-free square with wide pavement invites users without dictating to do so. Near the Singelgracht a spacious quay steps down towards the water.
On top of the Singelgracht-block a spectacular dune landscape appears, including a natural swimming pool. The green house and wooden deck terrace provide space for residents to work, relax and have fun. Or grow plants. Neighbours of the Nassaukade, Groenmarkt and Marnixstraat will have a beautiful new and almost soft view. This will be a meaningful place to meet. For young and old folks. For sparrows and busy bees. Here, we embrace the city outside as well as inside.
