Dining, social and cultural facilities are united in this new College Campus Center replacing existing facilities scattered on far ends of the campus. Charged with imbuing each room with a distinct personality, the lighting plays a vital role in establishing the atmosphere.
The U-shaped center is organized around a central courtyard . The glass-fronted dining halls give visual connections to the spaces across the square. Each area has a unique identity, with the lighting sources and details helping to create a cohesive composition. Wood ceilings and surfaces are highlighted. and round and oval shaped fixtures are featured in the design as a recurring motif.
The College has a strong commitment to sustainable design and environmental responsibility, but started the design process with the firm belief that only incandescent lighting could make food look good. Through mock-ups we persuaded them to use more efficient sources to achieve the desired effect. The Campus Center’s interior lighting installation uses 17% less power than the maximum allowed by code, and the exterior uses 75% less. These results exceeded the College’s expectation for environmental stewardship.
The warm and inviting lighting is at times playful, intimate, formal and soothing. Most of all, it helps create a gathering space for all the college community to come together
