Graha SIBA is a new corporate headquarters for one of the largest transportation companies in the country. The building will unite the business’ newer strategic departments such as Research and Development, Information Technology, Finance, and Human Capital that has been formerly scattered in different locations across the country. As such, the building serves as a think tank and frontline as the 60-year-old company looks ahead to the future.
The building mass reflects the company’s history. The 6 story building is comprised of two contrasting yet interconnected volumes. A solid mass holds the building to the ground and provides a foundation for the lighter and transparent block that is lifted up and cantilevered from it. The space underneath the cantilevered volume becomes a lively outdoor terrace for the building occupants.
The building sits in an older part of the city, adjacent to a football field on its south, with a relatively limited site of just 478 square meters. Oriented in the east-west direction, the building responds to climate in a number of ways. The north facing wall of the building is at an angle to shade the building from the northern sun during the dry season from April to October of each year. This solid mass is clad in Aluminum Composite panels that change color according to solar position and viewing angle. The south cantilevered volume is mainly transparent to accommodate views to the football field, the surrounding, and the mountains, as well as to provide ample daylighting to the interior.
The building core and the service area are placed on the west side of the building – the direction with most solar insolation – while the regularly occupied areas are placed on the less extreme sides of the building. Programmatically, each of the lower floors will be occupied by each of the departments, while the two top floors will be occupied by the company’s leadership.
