GRISORO Studio was commissioned to transform a dated apartment in Greenwich Village's historic Albert building into a sophisticated urban retreat for a London-based family. This 1,800-square-foot, three-bedroom pied-à-terre showcases GRISORO's expertise in balancing architectural minimalism with rich materiality while highlighting panoramic Manhattan views. The comprehensive renovation encompassed a complete overhaul of the space, resulting in a space that perfectly serves as both a part-time residence for the London family and a full-time home for their sibling.
Located in The Albert, a pre-war building dating back to the 1850s, this property carries significant historical value. Originally constructed as row houses, the building later served as a hotel before being converted to apartments, with its final unification occurring in the 1920s. The Albert has hosted notable figures including Mark Twain, Thomas Wolfe, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and the Mamas & The Papas, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This rich heritage provided an inspiring backdrop for the design, particularly as the clients sought a distinctly New York aesthetic that would contrast with their historic London residence.
The design approach is centered on creating a minimalist architectural framework with clean white walls that direct attention to the spectacular cityscape views. This restrained backdrop allowed us to introduce warmth through vintage wood elements, carefully selected marble surfaces, aged metals, and organic textiles in warm tones. The design deliberately juxtaposes soft materiality with bold architectural statements, particularly in the kitchen where striking Calacatta viola marble contrasts with forest green cabinetry, and in the powder room where deep aubergine tones dramatically frame the window. The apartment's function as a secondary residence allowed for a more edited approach to storage, while the carefully curated interior features a sophisticated blend of pan-European Art Deco pieces, mid-century classics, contemporary designs, and bespoke elements, including a Hans Wegner desk, Danish Cabinetmaker Wing Chair, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa dining chairs.
This Greenwich Village pied-à-terre exemplifies GRISORO Studio's belief that secondary residences present unique opportunities to express unexpected aspects of a client's design aesthetic. The space achieves a delicate balance—feeling distinctly "New York" while remaining deeply personal to the owners through its thoughtful materiality and curated furnishings. By combining aged and patinated pieces alongside contemporary elements, the home possesses a gentle tension that is warm, fresh and dynamic. Despite the contrasting styles of individual pieces, a cohesive color palette and unified scale allows them to harmonize beautifully, creating an urban retreat that feels both sophisticated and welcoming—a perfect expression of what a pied-à-terre should be.
