Workshop/apd was selected from among 125 entries submitted by top designers and architects from around the world to design a model block for the Holy Cross neighborhood of New Orleans. Sponsored by Brad Pitt and Global Green USA, the Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans set out to create affordable, efficient, and healthy housing that could become a prototype for the rebuilding of the entire hurricane-damaged Gulf Coast region. "I'm so happy that this dream is going to become reality," said Brad Pitt. "We are one small step closer to a future of smart design and a rebuilt New Orleans. We hope this project points the way to that future." The mixed-use development will include an 18-unit multi-family building, five single-family homes, and a community center with services for working families, such as day care and retail. The community center will anchor the site and also function as a resource center where residents can learn more about sustainable design and green building practices. Additionally, the "educational transect" linking the project to the Mississippi riverfront provides an outdoor recreation area for the entire neighborhood.
