Green Man Lane is a five-hectare housing scheme in Ealing. Designed by Conran and Partners for housing provider A2Dominion, and built by developer Rydon, the scheme replaces a crumbling 1970s estate on the same site. The new development comprises 700 homes – a mixture of affordable, shared ownership and private sales – as well as park and community facilities.
Green Man Lane is a flagship scheme in the Police's Secured By Design initiative. The architects replaced the aerial walkways and open access undercrofts of the old estate with traditional street plans that introduce natural surveillance. On-street parking and secure rear gardens prevent vandalism, and thoroughfares are well-signposted. Such innovations have been shown to reduce crime by as much as 75%.
Phase 2a of Green Man Lane was completed in mid-2012, and the first residents have already moved in. Work continues on the rest of the scheme.
