This modern green kitchen once had many of the common features found in a 1979 home; 7' cabinetry with soffits above; 8' popcorn ceilings and "egg crate" ceiling tiles with fluorescent lighting; poor arrangement of appliances; lack of a window; insufficent storage and a "kitchen writing desk".
The solution for the project, in 244 square feet, considered the existing conditions to be a priority as well as maximizing energy-efficiency. The existing cabinets were deconstructed by Habitat for Humanity and donated to the organization. The new cabinets; made locally in a factory to minimize waste and transportation were installed to the full height for efficient storage. The ceiling was raised and T5HO cove light fixtures brightened the space. The Energy Star appliances were installed in a more functional arrangement, recycled glass Vetrazzo countertop and recycled glass "wet wall" made the "kitchen next door" one worthy of being featured in a magazine.
Additional features were back painted glass on the cooking backsplash areas, no-voc Sherwin Williams Harmony paint and a waste management program.
