Historically, shifts in American education have occurred in response to political and economic crises - society altered curricular models to provide students with the tools and resources to resolve pressing issues. Driven by climate change, volatility of oil-dependent systems, and an economic downturn, we propose a curriculum rooted in Scottsdale and the Sonoran Desert. The curriculum will encourage active citizenship by providing each generation with the capacity to understand and analyze the values and systems that sustain their lives in the desert. In concert with innovative technologies and strategies, engaged citizens will contribute to the continued regeneration of their community.
