Green Field Park is a mountain landscape deliberately preserved during urban expansion. Located on the western side of Longquan Mountain in Chengdu, the park covers approximately 17.3 acres. It offers citizens a natural space for cautious use, while retaining a real and continuous urban habitat for wildlife.
Long-term natural succession has shaped the slopes and low-lying wetlands into a complex mosaic of habitats, providing stable living conditions for various wild species. Building on this ecological foundation, the design adopts low intervention as its core principle. Through ecological sensitivity assessment, the site is divided into habitat conservation zones and controlled open areas. Human activities are concentrated at the foothills, forest edges, and selected open spaces, protecting the core ecological areas.
Paths follow existing ridgelines and original landforms, while resting nodes are placed in forest clearings and gentle slopes, avoiding large-scale excavation and vegetation removal. Hiking trails are paved with red sandstone, and resting facilities are made of sleepers and natural stone. All materials were transported manually during construction to minimize disturbance.
Two micro-wetlands were restored while maintaining their original hydrological structures. Shallow zones were expanded, aquatic plants replanted, and runoff connections with surrounding water systems re-established. This enables flood drainage during wet seasons and water replenishment during dry periods, improving wetland stability. Limited wooden boardwalks allow wetland observation without entering sensitive areas. At night, partial lighting is automatically switched off to reduce disturbance to nocturnal wildlife.
After completion, ongoing ecological monitoring has recorded a gradual increase in bird and waterfowl populations. Public use has also formed a shared understanding: activities focus on observation, learning, and short stays, with no commercial involvement. Nature remains the true focus.
Green Field Park establishes a restrained and stable coexistence between the city and wild nature, offering a replicable ecological practice for urban environments.
