The site of the visitor center is due south of Grants
Tomb, on 122nd street and Riverside Drive. It is to hold a visitor
center for the tomb, as well as an achieve. The site issues include limited access to the tomb plaza and
to the park from the city.
My concept was based around a grid of lines extruded
from the tomb and the angle of W122nd street. This created a system of
organization that informed the layout of the building. From these lines, using
a shear and a push/pull system; program, structure, and circulation were
created. The roof plane is a continuation of the ground pane which is folded
and manipulated along the same gird lines.
The achieve is located underground and is a “carved out”
space like the tomb interior. It embodies the history of Grant as the tomb
holds Grants body.
By minimizing the impact of the building on the site, it
does not overpower the tomb, but supports it. It is a threshold between the
city and the monument, and acts as an introduction to it. Allowing the roof to
be a manipulation of the landscape, the visitor center is also a threshold from
the city to park, making the transition less awkward, then in the sites
pervious condition.
