Standing between the nostalgia of a past with his children and the exuberance of a future with his grandchildren, the client looked for his retirement home on the outskirts of Hermosillo, with generous social spaces to host family gatherings and intimate spaces to work, exercise and rest, always in contact with nature.
The client’s passion for traditional Sonoran ranch houses and the extreme weather of Hermosillo (50C in the summer) guided the project’s design process. A contemporary approach to local architectonic elements molded the structure of the house, such as white walls, terracotta roof tiles, lattices and courtyards.
Shielding from the east, the main facade consists of a single, solid volume extending throughout the lot’s length. It’s single-sloped roof alternates solid, concrete slabs with terracotta roof tiles cladding and lattices built with metal structure and the same roof tiles, suggesting the existence of courtyards. The house hides itself between it’s white walls and opens towards the lake to the west, presenting the social spaces and the pool with fantastic views. Meanwhile, the more intimate spaces guide the user towards the numerous courtyards throughout the house, gifting every area of the house with ventilation, natural light and contact with the exterior.
Grandpa’s house evokes memories of traditional Sonoran architecture with a view towards the future, mirroring the main resident’s life.
