The Grand Hotel des Bains, built on the shore of the Venice Lido in 1900,
marked the start of significant redevelopment of the Venetian island,
accelerating expansion of high quality tourism and construction that was to
turn the Venice Lido into a new leisure resort on the European and
international panorama. The shores of Venice Lido became a refuge and place of
inspiration for big names on the old and new continents, such as Goethe, Byron,
George Sand, De Musset, Mann. The inauguration of the 1st International Film
Festival in 1932 saw further evolution of the Lido and the start of its role as
a venue for one of the most important international gatherings. Liz Taylor,
Robert de Niro, Woody Allen over time chose to stay at the Grand Hotel des
Bains. It was also a favourite with film directors. In October 1970, Luchino
Visconti filmed ‘Death in Venice’ here, followed by Anthony Minghella in 1996,
who selected it as the location for ‘The English Patient’, the film that went
on to win nine Oscars.
