Located between Gramercy Park and Stuyvesant Square, the design of this home transports one from the noisy, bustling city to a tranquil and serene atmosphere. The apartment is on the top three floors of a building made of several townhouses that had been grouped together.
We transformed the awkwardly planned two-bedroom with two-bath apartment into a spacious and elegant four-bedroom with three-bath home by first rigorously analyzing the space. The circulation was reorganized to maximize the usable space and a formerly unattractive stair was replaced with a custom-made sculpture composed of solid oak and black metal. Large, rift-sawn white oak cabinet doors extend from floor to ceiling and create the effect of a paneled room, highlighting the custom stone slab fireplace surround.
Relocating the rooms was one of the results from the analysis: the penthouse becomes a primary suite adjacent to a terrace and the new spa-like en-suite bathroom benefits from placing the shower below a large existing skylight. The kids’ rooms and home office were located on the lower level, along with a bath designed for sharing and a new Laundry Room (a space that didn't exist before). Every inch of space is designed to maximize storage, down to drawers hidden in the face of the stair risers. On the main level, the kitchen was enlarged and improved and compliments the main room paneling and fireplace. The careful detailing defines the spaces without adding visual noise, and the palette was limited to natural materials, creating a calm and cohesive atmosphere.
