This 450sf studio in NYC’s hip Gramercy neighborhood features a large window, and interesting city views. The client, a businesswoman, wanted a chic pied à terre in which to feel at home and entertain on her frequent visits to Manhattan. The solution was to remove extraneous elements so the existing obstructed space could have more light penetration and be more spacious. Cabinetry was designed, and furniture selected to maximize storage, support flexibility, and allow for entertaining. Storage opportunities were maximized to accommodate the client’s wardrobe while leaving a maximum of floor space open and available.
Near the entry, a frosted pocket door to the bathroom brings light deep into the space. A dressing and sleeping area is partially defined by a custom closet designed to fulfill the client’s particular storage needs.
One set of double doors opens to provide full height mirrors on both sides. Another set features shelves that present an ample shoe collection. Inside the closet, hanging space is maximized and an area that would be hard to reach is used to create a utility closet for the adjacent bathroom.
Continuing in, the apartment opens before you; the client’s art collection is accommodated with museum quality lighting. The kitchen is quietly integrated into the main entertaining space: it is all countertop with full amenity appliances below.
The apartment is expanded with easy transformations: the dining table doubles in size; a daybed becomes an enclosed and peaceful sleeping nook when an interior shade drops between the living and sleeping areas and double sided curtains are deployed for privacy.
The bathroom was upgraded with marble wall tile, accessories, and a utility closet that accesses an otherwise hard-to-get-to part of the bedroom storage unit.
With storage maximized, this studio offers a sense of spaciousness uncommon for apartments of its size.
