---------------------------------
The goal of this renovation was to create a comfortable, open living space, for a growing family of four. This client came as a referral after they had just purchased the floor directly below their starter apartment. They required Breanna Carlson’s architectural expertise to reconfigure the two floors into one seamless duplex so they wouldn’t have to leave their beautiful Gramercy location and stunning, landmark-status Tudor building behind.
They started with a tiny galley kitchen and wanted to expand it to open onto the living and dining areas. They were also in need of additional bedrooms with large closets, and desired a laundry room, office, playroom for their boys, and an internal staircase to connect the two apartments. Carlson made the first floor more public and entertainment focused, while the second was more private with their personal bedrooms and bathrooms.
In addition to significantly renovating the structure of the duplex, Carlson, ensured that every element of the design was meaningful to the clients. The toilet room is wallpapered in the same wallpaper used at the Beverly Hills Hotel which was the location of the couples’ wedding reception. Carlson hand-selected two stone fireplace mantels which were salvaged from old Brooklyn Brownstones to replace the modern fireplace units in the living room and master bedroom. Period appropriate moldings and electrical switches with unlacquered brass plates were installed throughout. In addition, Carlson designed a custom sink for their downstairs powder room. The final result is thus a mixture of the Persian and Scandinavian heritage of both parents and a comfortable and casual design that allows for the relaxed everyday as well as the busy social life of the family.
