As one walks through any city street it is undoubtedly certain that the one thing that will be seen is graffiti, whether it is in Montréal, New York, Los Angeles or Tokyo. Graffiti is part of every city culture whether it is embraced or looked down upon. It may be courageous, rebelling, appalling or even insulting to some, but graffiti is a form of art often produced by extremely talented individuals. It is an art that can be enjoyed by everyone, young or old, art enthusiast even philistines. There is no fee to view graffiti, instead it is often the artist who pays the fee. If only we could all be the rebelling artist for one night, without the danger, without the fear and without the consequences.
This project proposes the installation of nine interactive illuminated panels activated by the human touch. Each panel would be designed with an acrylic casing housing all electronics for the touch screen capabilities. The panels were designed to match the existing site lines of the Place des Festival. With its sharp diagonals and segmented circles, there was a need to enhance the existing, not clash or belittle it. Inspired by the graffiti of Montreal, users would be able to “paint” their own art onto the panels with a simple touch with the aid of interactive touch screens in each of the panels. Using their fingers users will activate the colour in the panels creating a free form line. Instead of only being bystanders, this installation allows the citizens of Montreal to become the actors and be part of the art, creating, drawing and allowing us all to become graffiti artist for the night.
The installation is also based on curiosity. If curiosity was non existent, then this piece could not function without constant direction and instruction. Fortunately we are curious, and with the help of the curiosity of the first person to walk by the panel and have a need to touch the piece, a chain reaction will then ensue with illuminated graffiti on the panels. Every dawn the panels will dimmer into plain, stale white canvases, waiting for dusk to arrive for the next set of artist to claim their space. What the artists in all of us will create is to be seen, the possibilities are endless, some will be funny, some grotesque, some beautiful and some degrading but all will be illuminated for all to see.
