ContextWith 19 cultural monuments, the Staatsbetrieb Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen is one of the most significant cultural institutions in the trinational region of Germany–Poland–Czech Republic. With the goal of improving tourism development a concept was to be drawn up in the scope of an open, two-stage realisation competition to reinforce the communication of the relationship of the properties to the institution via a uniform appearance of the guidance systems.
Planning concept
Vertical, information bearers are dispensed with in favour of an undisturbed view. The information and guidance system consists of horizontal, monolithic information bearers in coloured concrete. An indented plinth acts as shadow gap to even out irregularities and supports the floating effect of the elements and therefore the intended careful handling of the site. The distance created means that places and buildings are perceived more strongly as »exhibits«. Visitors draw their primary orientation from a three-dimensional, tactile model at the main entrance points, augmented on larger sites with plans of individual sections. Flyer, apps and websites for mobile end devices serve to further expand the possibilities of communicating information.
Design concept
Fine pictograms are prefixed to the information in German and English. Garamond, the standard font of the »Schlösser und Gärten«, is set in italics in its English form and somewhat smaller than the German. The service information is highlighted in the yellow of the organisation, mak-
ing it rapidly identifiable.
