ContextMore than one hundred years after its opening on 29/09/1900 the Art Nouveau Kongreßhalle Leipzig, designed by Heinrich Rust, can look back upon a turbulent history. Originally constructed as a »civic assembly building« by the stock corporation »Aktiengesellschaft Zoologischer Garten Leipzig«, it served as a military hospital during the First World War. Until 1981 the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra played here. The renovation of the existing building and expansion to include further congress rooms was implemented by HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner.
Design concept
Large-format arrows provide direction at the edge of spaces or appear to emerge from them. In the scope of the use of the building as a venue for fairs and events they represent dynamic communication and intensive interaction. Much in the manner of a keyword matrix used to accentuate frequently used words in a weblog, all of the information on the arrows are arranged in the form of so-called word clouds. In keeping with the theme, the signage comprises a contemporary, constructed font and accompanying arrows.
Realization
The arrows are applied to the walls with paint, with content details provided in the form of three-dimensional letters. Three grey shades are selected for the lettering, with good legibility provided by the combination with the exposed concrete and white rendered walls.
