ContextOnce the residence and seat of power of the Saxon electors and kings, today the castle houses the headquarters of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden – Dresden State Art Collections –as well as four of its museums, including the famous »Grüne Gewölbe«, the Green Vault, one of the richest treasure houses in Europe. Extensive construction measures – in particular the roofing-over of the small castle courtyard as central point of access by architecture office Peter Kulka – enabled the mutual integration of the museums and new pathways. By the time the renovation work is completed an information and guidance system will have been realised that will guide the annually anticipated 1.8 million visitors to their destination through the complex heritage-listed castle grounds.
Design concept
The positioning of the inscriptions is based upon the spatial conditions, with lines of sight and edge locations utilised for directional information. The inscriptions are discreet but distinctive, painted directly onto the walls.
Materiality
Individual, sculpted letters and pictograms in a rhomboid structured, cast acrylic glass material are reminiscent of jewels, highlighting the unique character of the location as the former residence of Augustus the Strong. The refinement of the lettering with three-dimensional letters is plan-
ned following completion of the renovation work; for the interim period the letters are painted directly onto the wall.
