This scheme incorporates 35 affordable dwellings and 4 offices with a community room on the site of the Grade II* listed former railway station, Gosport. Re-Format sourced the site and submitted a competition entry in collaboration with the client and project team which were then engaged to deliver the entire project, including a conservation architect for the English Heritage grant.
The design concept unifies the platform ruins and entablatures to create a complete enclosure around a central landscaped courtyard; the former railway tracks. It was important that the contemporary elements were inserted in such a way that the character of the original station was enhanced within the new mix of uses. The project is arranged around 3 landscaped areas and 3 car park courts with their own cycle and bin storage. These all make unequivocal re-use of the original site hierarchy. In addition, new houses front on to an existing cycle route giving this pathway an active and secure frontage.
