The challenge was to provide additional accommodation for this Grade ll listed former Meeting House in Claverton, Bath. The original building had already been converted in the 1990s with a rather ‘traditional’ extension added at the rear. Our response was to provide a counterpoint to the very solid and grounded original building, linked only by a simple glass link. The bedroom and bathroom extension are built from a timber frame and clad in cedar slats to give an ephemeral, de materialised quality in contrast to the original building. The visual appearance from the street is minimal with glazing openings that connect the bedroom to the garden on the rear side. A rooflight to the new bathroom frames a view of a carved angel on the original building.
