Located on Diani Beach, Mombasa, Kenya, Golden Beach Hotel occupies a prime 7.647 Ha site with 200m of direct beach frontage. Diani Beach is considered the best beach resort area in Kenya and is located 35 Km from the principal sea port in Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city. With its tropical beaches and dramatic wildlife parks, Kenya is one of the worlds prime tourism destinations. The site is well situated for access by road and is in close proximity of the Diani airstrip and the Moi International Airport in Mombasa. The existing hotel currently houses 152 guest bedrooms, 4 bars, retail areas, swimming pool with island bar, tennis courts, restaurant and pool grill. Originally designed by British Architects Hughes & Polkinghorne in the modernist style the property and site offers extensive re-development potential. Directly neighbouring the site are Southern Palms resort and Afro Chic boutique hotel. The award winning Diani Reef Beach resort & Spa is within in close proximity to the site. The existing hotel focuses was designed around maximising the width of view available to the rooms. The abundant width of the site is the starting point for the proposed concept which looks at re-configuring the site into 3 parts. Each part has the potential of accommodating a different use. To make these parts function successfully they require an active frontage -a new Focal point within the site. The proposed scheme creates an active central zone to maximise the active frontage of the 3 site components. This combined with the existing sloped terrain of the site helps to create buildings that will enjoy both internal views to the active zone as well as unobstructed external views to the sea. The concept re-invents the site as having a new luxury 5 star Hotel component, a flexible existing building that can either house hotel apartments or remain as hotel use. The third component of the site is portioned for exclusive luxury residences with their own exclusive access.
