The Major Projects Office within the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning was responsible for managing the design, procurement and construction of works associated with delivering sporting venues to host the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held 4 to 15 April. The Bid proposed the precinct as the home for the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, badminton, wrestling and weight lifting venues and associated warm-up facilities for these sports. Under the GC2018 delivery programme the precinct is anticipated to be redeveloped in several stages.
Elite sports attraction is valuable to the city’s economic development and sports advocacy programs. The increase of such activities has the capability of encouraging the development of a sports and training precinct that supports the presence of allied professions, club and organisational administration and is subsequently an employment generator. The Carrara Sports Precinct will be highly utilised by a broad cross-section of the community due to its central location and anticipated surrounding infrastructure growth.
The key new facility located at Carrara is the Gold Coast Sport & Leisure Centre (GCSLC) is the nominated venue for the Badminton, Wrestling & Table Tennis programs for the Commonwealth Games.
The facility consists of two major Halls with a ‘Street’ space mediating between the Halls that holds change rooms, amenities, meeting room, function spaces & food & beverage offerings.
Following the Commonwealth Games, the GCSLC will be a major site for community & professional sporting groups, particularly netball and basketball, with a large number of users. The facility can operate to accommodate a 5000 strong crowd as an arena setup.
The bold colour and material palette embodies the young, vibrant and confident image of the Gold Coast. The unexpected and surprising arrangement of the facilities provides a facility which is unique and memorable.
The facility responds to a difficult set of flooding and environmental briefed items which address the impact of facility on adjoining neighbourhood and properties, maximising the number of precinct sports fields, Metricon Stadium event operations including transport and parking, Gold Coast Suns FC operational and training requirements, and overlays for various cultural and entertainment events.
