“Roztoc” is the ancient Slavic word for “disperse of a
river”. Since the early days, the inhabitants were modifying the water to their
interests
Today the tanner quarter exposes itself as a separate part
of Rostock, with almost no contact to the inner city. The completion area
obtains it special quality out of the position right between the historic
defence work and the Warnow with its ecological precious flood plains. Although
Rostock offers 16km of riverbank, there are only few possibilities to access
the water from the city centre. The potential of cities near the water is
rarely being used in Rostock.
Our concept is exploiting this enormous potential: Where
once the canal was running, we let the Warnow disperse to broad water.
An island arises.
On the one hand, we gain a very attractive water surface
right in the city and on the other hand; the natural watersides of the Warnow
with its flood plains and areas of unspoiled nature remain unaffected.
The setting of a vital new space between Old Town, new
district and waterline creates an open view to the ancient city. An urban promenade
establishes a counterpart to the ancient city wall.
Located east of the promenade an intensely concentrated
urban construction is being planned, which will vitalize the island. It is
equally establishing an attraction for tourists and downtown inhabitants.
A great chance to force an urban city development is caused
by mixing functions and an intense concentration. A highly attractive quarter
is created right next to the water that will initiate a new impulse to the eastern
Old Town. By remaining themed renaturising the eastern Warnow’s watersides, the
island gains an attraction on both sides, which are available to all
inhabitants.
Within the scope of the European 9 Competition a solution
is presented, that is attached to the Old Town and will generate identification
to entire Rostock. The waterline combines Old Town and Extension way better
than any erected structure und assigns a unique quality to the new district …
