A retail facility created in an old, dilapidated building in the heritage precinct of Mumbai city. With all the limitations, the situation presented, it also offered more than a few positive opportunities.
The high-ceiling – so unusual to find these days – and the old cast-iron columns, were the triggers that drove the design concept. The old components of the building system were retained and restored, around which the operational facilities were organised.
There was no desire to imitate the old features, other than to restore them and bring out its hidden qualities. All other new additions adopted contemporary technology and expression, to create an interesting duality between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ components of the scheme.
