This country retreat in an area of outstanding natural beauty is
complex and nuanced which engages people and allows the dwelling a unique character.
The
site is steep dropping 15 metres over its 68.5 metre length and the climate is
sometimes harsh.  As a response, the
design is topographically driven maximizing the existing landscape’s natural
views and quirks creating a sense of connection between the building and its
dramatic surroundings.  Making use of
natures natural geological formations allowed us to merge the man-made
structure within the natural contours of the land thus enabling us to create
thoroughly modern architecture that adopts the spirit of the vernacular without
resorting to mimicking its forms.  It was
important to us as architects as well as our client that we fused new
technologies with older building techniques whilst incorporating sustainability
ideals in order to create a rural architecture for the 21st century,
rather than simply remodelling or recreating the methods and manners of the
past.
