We were asked to design a luxury camping facility near Seoul in South Korea. The site was located on the outskirts of Seoul, in an area called Yangpyeong. We designed the ‘pod’ based on the form of the ‘Lotus’ flower. The flower has come to be associated with purity and beauty and symbolic of Buddhism, one of the traditional Korean religions. To try and create a space for people wanting to escape city life, we based our design around this flower.
In accordance with the form, using different depths of ‘wings’ allowed us to create openings for people to enjoy the view towards the nature as well as keeping the privacy from the other surrounding pods on the site. The introduction of the central roof light and by using wrap around fabric brings indirect sunlight into the secluded pod.
