Situated
along the shallow banks of the Roaring Fork River, the design of this Woody
Creek Canyon residence was dictated by its dramatic natural surroundings.
Cantilevered forms and angled yet clean masses were utilized to create a
seamless juxtaposition between the built form of the architecture and the
majesty of the natural setting. Positioned between the riparian zone associated
with the river and the surrounding windswept sage and rabbitbrush fields, the
two-level design evokes the experience of being nestled against the river,
exposed to the open prairie and in a dramatic mountain valley all at the same
time. The relationship of these three competing experiences ultimately drove
the layout and final design. The project posed several challenges from
the outset: the site is located in a steep east-west valley with Highway 82 to
the south across the river. The focus was to maximize the home’s engagement
with the river while turning its back to the highway – a seemingly conflicted
goal. A secondary effort was to capture as much natural daylight and passive
solar as possible in order to counter the shortened days and long shadows cast
by the steep canyon walls.
