Gertie is a glass- and copper-clad volume that has been inserted into the ground floor of a new mixed-use development in the heart of Williamsburg. The glass façade opens the volume up to the immediate neighborhood, while the patinated copper façade serves as a beacon for traffic on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Within the volume, there is a community of restaurant spaces, each with a different identity: the café space is defined by a colorful palette that draws in passersby from the street; the dining room features a long, vaulted ceiling made of plywood; the bar, which is slightly elevated above the rest of the spaces, is characterized by its more intimate scale.
