The new Plaza beside the Hessian State Theatre in Darmstadt is basically sectioned into three areas. The open, gently terrassed middle section, featuring inserted strips of lawn, acts as a forecourt to the theatre. It is oriented to the theatres impressive new portal, which is also used as on outdoor stage, and enhances the spatial relation of the theatre to the city.To both sides are raised areas lined with rows of Japanese Pagoda Trees, inviting people to stroll, play or sit in their shade.Access to the underground car park below (newly refurbished to meet current standards) is provided by two rows of staircases that lead directly onto the Plaza. They are flanked by undulating retaining walls and accentuated by slender, umbrella-like pillars that offer protection from the weather.During daytime hours plenty of daylight is channeled through the generous staircases into the underground car park. At night time, the surface of the umbrellas reflect light to illuminate the plaza.Toward the east the middle section of the Georg-Büchner-Plaza is seperated from the Wilhelminen-Plaza by a sheet of water dotted by fountains. It is now home to the sculpture „grande disco“ by Arnaldo Pomodoro. The closely related design vocabulary in the signature elements of the plaza and the theatre and the use of common materials create a coherent overall impression.
