This project is located near Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kamogawa River, a beloved area where one can feel the history and nature of the ancient capital of Japan. The main design concept is to have the people who live in this residence deepen their attachment to Kyoto in their daily lives. The followings are the idea we have made to achieve the concept. This protected low-rise residential neighborhood has strict height restrictions. Hence, a reverse beam structure is used to reduce building scale while ensuring comfortable living spaces with high ceilings and large openings to bring light, wind, and view. Furthermore, we have extracted and employed traditional design elements such as overlapping eaves on the facade and spatial planning with a hidden private entrance recessed in lush landscaping creating continuity with the Kyoto townscape.
