The Gentlemen’s Apartment spans across the top two floors of a grand Art Nouveau building, including its adapted attic. Open AD took on its complete transformation from floor plan to furniture and fixtures. We created a concept driven by playful contrasts such as old and new, work and play, father and son. The interior is enriched with robust natural materials and colours, which are an expression of masculinity. Bespoke wood wall panelling and marble surfaces create an evocative setting for handpicked designer furniture from the likes of Minotti.
Historically, the front-facing interiors would have been more lavish, while the back of such buildings was reserved for staff quarters. Open AD preserved this contrast, planning for shared living quarters on the street side and bedrooms towards the back. Since the apartment is home to a father and son, both adults, the father spends more time on the 1st floor, while the son’s private quarters are on floor 2. We ensured a change in atmosphere and aesthetics between both floors. A dramatic statement staircase creates the impression of levitating and transports between the two levels both physically and mentally. New volumes such as the silver bathroom unit are inspired by the idea of a space ship - fresh landings in a historical setting.
The interior facilitates separating work and play. Lighting helps conjure different moods and sensations. The sauna area is a space to relax and let loose in the comfort of one's own home. And the quirky tower becomes a grown-up treehouse or man cave.
