The Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC) is one of the largest and comprehensive community recreation centers in the U.S. Since its completion in 2000, the GCCC has been a focal point for the community and has become a recognizable symbol of the city of Santa Fe. The project program included the design of a new Main Entry vestibule for the center that will increase the energy performance for the center and provide a recognizable entry feature for this iconic building. A secondary entry to the facility’s therapy pool and site work were also included in the project scope.
The new Main Entry vestibule provides much needed visibility for the entry to the GCCC. The up-lifting design contains a passively tempered waiting and overflow area, wrapped in an angled perforated metal skin. The skin’s design is informed by environmental control strategies and programmatic needs of the new entry. A curtain wall under an existing roof provides the transparency desired in an entry to a major public building and angled fins provide solar control needed to reduce glare. The vestibule is also designed as an airlock to prevent heat loss through wind infiltration. The Main Entry skin also integrates building signage, reinforcing an identity for the building.
